Aging, Geroscience and Longevity:

This editorial banner was created for eLife's special issue on 'Aging, Geroscience and Longevity'. With this issue, they highlighted recent advances in our understanding of mechanisms involved in ageing and interventions that can extend longevity. The sand timers were adapted to convey the illusion of time passing and cells ageing and it was important to us to emphasise the desire to extend the human life span.

Aging

As we age our cells change in a variety of ways. They become larger and less efficient at dividing and replenishing lost and damaged cells, and the number of fatty substances and pigments found within cells also increases. Because of these changes, they lose their ability to function normally or may lost their function completely.
